All about Jewish egg donation

December 3, 2024

In Judaism, roots matter. And it’s no wonder — it’s a religion (and an ethnicity) that dates back almost 4,000 years, with a rich history filled with beautiful stories and epic traditions. The pride that Jewish people feel when passing down customs and practices of old is second to none.

Which is why at the Chosen Group, we believe it’s so important for families to have options that respect their Jewish heritage. And so, at Chosen Egg Bank and The Chosen One Egg Donation Agency, we give our clients access to an expansive list of Jewish egg donors, to help them keep tradition alive.

So if you’re new to egg donation, and are interested in learning more about the Jewish perspective on the subject, we’re here to talk you through it! Read on to discover everything you need to know about Jewish egg donation and our fully kosher process.

Why Jewish egg donation?

In Orthodox Judaism, bloodline is important. Specifically, the bloodline of the mother. It’s known formally as matrilineal descent, meaning that for someone to be considered Jewish under Orthodox law, their mother needs to be of Jewish heritage. Now, for those Jews who do not practice Orthodox Judaism, the request for Jewish egg donation may be more of a preference than a strict requirement. No matter your reasoning, Chosen Egg Bank is here to help!

Why is tradition so important to Jews?

Judaism holds tradition up as a high priority. For millennia, Jewish people have been chanting the same prayers, eating the same foods, and following the same practices without fail. Whether Jews are Ashkenazi, Sephardic Mizrahi, Beta Israel descended from Ethiopia, or any other group — there is a line of connection between them all. Jews have spread far and wide across the globe, but these connections persist, tying people together who may otherwise not have so much in common.

How do we know our donors are Jewish?

When a Jewish individual seeks to become an egg donor with us, they must go through our regular vetting process for mental and physical health. But beyond that, they must submit required documents, attend an interview, and go through a separate process of investigation into their Jewish roots with a Judaism test by a rabbinical court. Once approved by the rabbi as Jewish and halakhic single, we will receive a Certificate of Judaism.

And when it’s time for egg retrieval, special supervisors called Mashgiach oversee the process to ensure its integrity. They are present throughout the entire process, from the operating room to the laboratory, where the eggs are handled and worked on.
