5 things to consider before you donate your eggs

September 23, 2024

If you are considering taking the first step on the journey of becoming an egg donor — let us start by commending you! Donating the gift of life to a family in need is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have.

At Chosen Egg Bank, we’ve spent years working closely with a wide variety of egg donors, from all over the world. And though we work with a diverse group of donors, one thing they all have in common is the truly unforgettable experience of their egg donation, and the lifelong knowledge that their generosity has helped people everywhere achieve their dreams of growing their families.

It is a deep part of our mission to be a warm and welcoming partner to all of our wonderful donors — giving them the insights they need to make the right decisions for their lives and their futures. Which is why we’ve put together a list of five essential considerations you should know, before you become an egg donor. Read this list, and when you’re ready, we’ll be right here to assist you in your next steps!

Consideration #1: Not everyone can be an egg donor

The first thing you should take into consideration, before anything else, is whether or not you are qualified to become an egg donor. And although every egg bank and egg donation agency has their own set of requirements, at Chosen Egg Bank, we are committed to providing our clients with only the healthiest egg donors. That means we utilize a vigorous vetting process to ensure our donors are of the highest mental and physical health. All of our donors need to be between the ages of 18 – 30, be non-smokers, and have a body-mass index (BMI) of below 33 to qualify.

Consideration #2: There is a time commitment

Egg donation is more than just a quick procedure, in fact it’s a combination of processes that can add up to a somewhat lengthy commitment. Applying to Chosen Egg Bank works as follows: First, you apply to be an egg donor, where we will quickly schedule a one-on-one call to introduce you to the process. You then build a detailed profile with all of your personal information that is relevant to prospective parents. Following that, you will go through a series of medical screenings, phone calls and blood tests — where you will be required to return to your local clinic multiple times before the final egg retrieval process. Overall, you can expect the process to last anywhere between several weeks to a few months.

Consideration #3: What is the recovery process like?

The egg retrieval process is a quick and fairly simple medical procedure that lasts only 10 – 20 minutes. It requires a mild anesthetic and doesn’t require an overnight stay. After a short rest, you will be assessed by a clinician and released. Donors usually recover from the procedure within a few days, but the majority are completely ready to resume normal activities within just 24 hours! During this recovery period, we ask you to refrain from heavy lifting, intense exercise, sexual intercourse and alcohol consumption.

Consideration #4: You can donate more than once

If everything goes well the first time, we would be more than happy to assist you in donating again, if you wish! At Chosen Egg Bank, we’re proud of the long-lasting relationships we’ve built with our beloved egg donors, and have many who have donated their eggs time and time again. For your safety, we follow the guidelines set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, which allows an egg donor to donate a maximum of six times.

Consideration #5: You will be compensated (generously) for your eggs

Once you’ve finished the egg retrieval procedure, our team will be in contact with you to arrange payment. At Chosen Egg Bank, we compensate our donors, depending on several factors, anywhere between $6,000 to $10,000 (and possibly more) when you successfully donate your eggs. Donors who have previously worked with us, as well as those who possess desirable qualities, may receive an even higher compensation for future donations.

When making the important decision to donate your eggs, these are just some of the many factors to consider. But there’s one consideration that many egg donors put above all else — the satisfaction of making a family’s dream come true.
